Plovdiv & Bachkovo Monastery
Plovdiv is the second largest city of Bulgaria, situated on the Maritsa River. It is older than most of the oldest towns like Rome, Athens, Carthage or Constantinople, almost contemporary of Troy. Plovdiv is a town built upon layers of older towns and a culture developed upon strata of diverse cultures. Its old part, called the Old Town, with houses from the National Revival period (18-19th century), is an imposing open-air museum situated on the three hills of ancient Trimontium. Remains of ancient, mediaeval, revival and modern culture coexist and are interwoven into the unobtrusive, but irresistible, eternal beauty of this city.
Bachkovo Monastery is the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria. It is located in the heart of Rodopi Mountains at 35 km from Plovdiv. The monastery was founded in 1083 by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin Grigorii Bakuriani Abaziy and his brother. The monastery is surrounded by the hills of the mountains, which together with its size and antiquity make it one of the most visited sights in Bulgaria. Unfortunately, only a two-storey ossuary was preserved from. The Ossuary is a unique historical site which is worth visiting for its ancient mural paintings, which rank among the most valuable works of Orthodox art from 11-12th century.
